"I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God...having the glory of God." (Revelation 21:2,11)

Behold I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing,
and her people a joy (Isaiah 65:17).

The holy city, or New Jerusalem,
is the Lord's New Church (Arcana Coelestia 3858:2).

In the book of Revelation, the Lord showed His apostle John a vision of the New Jerusalem descending from heaven. Centuries later, the Lord revealed that this holy city symbolizes the teachings of a New Church - a new Christianity. Each part of the beautiful city - the foundations of precious stones, the twelve gates of pearl, the golden walls and streets - pictures characteristics of this church which the Lord invites all people to enter.

The inner meaning of John's visions was revealed to a man named Emanuel Swedenborg in the 18th century. Swedenborg also witnessed the beginning of the New Christian Church when, on June 19th, 1770, the Lord sent His disciples throughout the spiritual world to teach people that He alone is God and that His kingdom will endure forever. For this reason, June 19th is commemorated as the birthday of the New Church.

We hope these materials will help you to celebrate the beauty of John's vision of the holy city, New Jerusalem - the Lord's New Church - and to seek the eternal peace and joy that can be found within its gates.
